The film run may be coming to an end, but Harry Potter lives on – in Florida

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

Well muggles, it all comes to an epic conclusion on 15th July. The boy wizard is grown up – stubble and all – and about to face his final battle in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’. Nowhere is going to be safe from Potter-mania. The last installment of J.K. Rowling’s phenomenal series follows the Gryffindor trio – Harry, Hermione and the perpetually scared-looking Ron – and their crusade to do away with evil Lord Voldemort once and for all. Hear-hear.

Will Harry rid the world of the Death Eaters once and for all? Will Snape get what’s coming to him? Will Ron and Hermione finally get together, for goodness sake? Whatever happens, it’s goodbye to the world of Quidditch, Diagon Alley and Platform Nine and Three Quarters for good. Or is it?

Of course not. Some bright spark had a truly ‘Lumos’ moment and came up with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Wizard or what? Part of the Universal Orlando Resort in Florida, the 20-acre, £160 million theme park is a fitting shrine to all things Potter. Muggles have been pouring through the entrance – or rather Hogsmeade village gate – since it opened in May 2010.

Rides like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey – a ride which takes in Hogwarts and a quidditch match, among other things – and ‘Dragon Challenge’ – the world’s only dueling inverted rollercoaster – are the big attraction. But there are also giant spiders, Dementors, and Butterbeer on tap. You can visit Ollivanders wand shop and send a Hogsmeade-postmarked letter from the Owl Post Office. And in Hogwarts Castle, you can check out the Gryffindor common room, Dumbledore’s den and the talking portraits – starring national treasure, Dawn French, as the Fat Lady.

By the time the last film hits the big screen, it’ll have been 14 years and 15 days since the first book, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, was released. Since then, 400 million copies of the series have been sold, the merchandise has been rolled out and J.K. has raked in a cool one billion pounds. And, although the books are long over and the films are almost done and dusted, the adventure will live on in the world’s theme park capital. If only we could get there by floo powder…
