It’s January, so we’re predicting what’s going to be big for travel in 2018 thanks to ABTA’s annual Travel Trends Report. Last year, it was all about the city break, with ABTA stating that over half of the population jetted off on one. That’s higher than the amount of people who downloaded Taylor Swift’s new album, or double-tapped that famous pic of Beyoncé revealing her pregnancy bump. You get the picture. But what’s on the cards this year? Here are the places and trends to watch in 2018…
Not content with heading off to one destination, we reckon holidaymakers will be keen to tick off multiple destinations on one trip. Sail around the clusters of Croatia and tick off gems like Brac Island or take time out in Thailand and hop from one slice of tropical paradise to another in Phuket and Koh Phi Phi. If that sounds too much like hard work, relax in hippy hangout Ibiza and take a thirty minute ferry over to the secluded island of Formentera for the day.
ABTA found that over half of holidaymakers want to try somewhere new in 2018, and this comes as no surprise. Big-hitter cities are struggling to cope with ‘overtourism’, this year’s buzzword. Help reduce the impact on these cities and explore somewhere new and crowd-free. Try up and coming Montenegro, with pine clad hills, gushing canyons and vast national parks. Or, dip into honey coloured Malta and explore Valetta, the European Capital of Culture for 2018. If you like to party, St Lucia’s one to try. Shimmy and shlurp on cocktails while enjoying the huge line-up of festivals and carnivals entertaining the paradise island in 2018.
While 2017 was all about glamping in yurts and praying the rain would stay away, 2018 is about backpacking in style a.k.a flashpacking. Forget cramped hostels and heavy rucksacks, though. Multi-centres offer up the chance to split your time between more than one place while staying in fancy hotels. Think traveller vibe, luxury surroundings. So if you fancy Morocco but can’t decide where you want to go, pair up bustling bazaars in Marrakech with beach time in Agadir.
According to ABTA, holidaymakers are savvier than ever. More and more people are booking further to secure the perfect holiday, and keeping a closer eye on budgets. Follow the money-saving crowd and make the most of our low deposits from £75, bag a free kids’ place, or scan our best deals. Wondering how else to save? Almost half of people surveyed by ABTA have taken a package holiday in the past 12 months – making it the most popular style of break. We reckon this is down to the value it provides, with most people finding it’s easier to save with a fixed budget. It’s lucky, then, that First Choice are the masters of All Inclusive. Forget worries about extra ice creams and drinks by the pool, and book in the knowledge that it’s all covered.
