  • Contrary to popular belief, babymoons aren’t about babies. In fact, they’re the last chance for an expectant couple to get away on holiday before the birth. Here’s everything you need to know about this travel trend, plus our top destination picks…

Babymoons are becoming all the rage. Forget the traditional post-wedding holiday, this one is all about getting expectant parents relaxed and ready for their new arrival. Plus, it’s the last chance (at least for a while) for couples to switch-off and spend some quality time together before the transition into a family. Babymoons are usually taken in the second trimester of a pregnancy, when it’s much safer to fly, and once mums-to-be have their energy back.

Before you head off on your babymoon, it’s important to keep your doctor in the loop and clear your travel plans with them, particularly if you’re at high risk. Make sure you check out any travel advisories for your destination like Zika outbreaks, for example. And, ensure that you’re up to date with your vaccinations and have checked out the medical facilities in your resort.

Ok, now that we’ve got the sensible bit out the way, here are our top places for a babymoon…

    Majorca

You don’t want to spend all your time on the plane or on the road, so pick a destination that’s just a short flight away to minimise discomfort and maximise your relaxation time. Majorca is just a two and a half hour flight from any London airport to Palma – so you’ll be there in no time at all – and there are loads of resorts near the airport you can take your pick from, too. Majorca’s capital Palma packs in historic sights, museums and a gorgeous cathedral which has a Blue Flag beach just behind it. Or, for a quieter break, pick laid-back Camp de Mar – a resort that celebs like Claudia Schiffer love. Stay at the beachfront Hotel Gran Camp de Mar – this place boasts a stylish pool scene, a chill-out zone and an onsite spa.

    Morocco

Morocco ticks a lot of babymoon boxes. It boasts year-round sunshine so you can holiday there whenever you want, it lines up loads of relaxing spas and opulent hotels at a wallet-friendly price, the food is delicious so you’ll satisfy all those cravings, and the time difference is the same so you won’t have any jet leg – yep, loads of wins. Head to Agadir to enjoy a sweeping golden sand coastline and the chance to souvenir shop at the souks. The RIU Palace Tikida Agadir has its own private beach area, plus two à la carte restaurants and a huge pool surrounded by decadent daybeds. There’s also a spa and wellness centre where you can book massages and beauty treatments – just the thing to get you relaxed before your bundle of joy arrives.

    Tenerife

The largest of the Canary Islands is a top pick for a babymoon thanks to its dependable sunny weather and mild climate, quiet resorts and choice of All Inclusive hotels. Pick Puerto de Santiago on the west coast of the island if you’re after a secluded spot. This resort lines up quiet black sand beaches, natural cliffside pools and laidback fishing villages where you can experience some of the local culture. Pick the clifftop Hotel Barcelo Santiago as your base to enjoy amazing views over Tenerife – you can even see the island of La Gomera from here. It also lines up three pools, an onsite tapas restaurant and loads of shops and restaurants within walking distance, too.

    Sicily

This island off the toe of Italy’s mainland offers a great mix of cultural sights and laid-back beaches. And, of course, there’s the Sicilian food – you can have your fill of as much pizza, pasta, arancini and Sicilian ice cream as you please. There are loads of luxury and boutique hotels to choose from which are perfect for a couples’ escape. The Athenee Palace in Cefalu is located in a peaceful spot and has its own stretch of pebble beach and three pools. And, the Hotel Caesar Palace is in a prime spot next to Mount Etna – so you’ll have some amazing views – and boasts its own private beach, huge pool and quiet location.
