Year-round sun, volcanic landscapes and beach hotspots; holidaying in the Canary Islands is a pretty easy choice. Where to stay, however, is a way trickier bag, with thousands of hotels to choose between. To make things easier, we’ve picked out our faves in lively Lanzarote and sleepy Fuerteventura.
Best for foodies: Occidental Jandia Mar
This Fuerteventura number brings a poolside snack bar, buffet restaurant and an à la carte restaurant to the table. After you’ve tucked in and been wowed by the show-cooking, take your pick of three different cocktail bars. It’s not all about the food and drink, though. Indulge in the fancy spa it offers a Finnish sauna and whirlpool, or sample the extensive menu of massage treatments.
Best for keeping busy: Occidental Lanzarote Mar
If you’re after a little bit more than lazing at the pool, this one’s for you. Famed for its extensive activity programme, there’s something to keep you busy all day. Slide into three pools, scale the climbing wall or test your aim with a game of minigolf. Once darkness falls, the entertainment programme springs into life. Relax with a cocktail in the piano bar while the kids show off their moves at the mini-disco, or enjoy a family night with entertainment from the island’s top musicians.
Best for the beach: Occidental Jandia Playa
It’s all in the name with this – Playa translates to beach in Spanish and this hotel is right beside it. Perched on a hill just above one of Fuerteventura’s most impressive sandy stretches, you’ll get unbeatable views of the Atlantic whether you’re in the pool or at the bar. Take the five-minute wander to the beach for a day of sun-worshipping, or explore the nearby town centre bustling with a selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Best for kids: Occidental Lanzarote Playa
If you’ve got little ones to please, look no further. Watch them splash about in the duo of pools, make pen pals in the hotel-run mini club, test each and every slide at the playground, or get competitive in the indoor games room. That’s not all, though. Wow them with parrot and reptile shows, or race them down the slides in rubber rings. And, if they’re no worn out by the evening, they’ll be entertained by a nightly programme of tribute acts, magicians and acrobats.
